Come to the SV social

"I would like to extend to you an invitation to the pants party. The party with the...with the pants. The party with pants."
"Brick, are you saying there's a party in your pants and I'm invited?" (Anchorman)

No, actually the party is in the comments of this entry! Come and join the fun and meet new people in SV fandom. I would especially like to encourage you quiet folks lurking in the back--even those of you without livejournals of your own--to drop by and introduce yourselves. We're all a pretty friendly bunch here, and we like to make new friends. Fandom is more fun when you get involved and meet people, so why don't you stop by and say hi?

Here's a little mini-questionnaire, almost completely stolen from [livejournal.com profile] svmadelyn's glee week social, in case you need a conversation starter, but feel free to answer as many or as few questions as you are interested in answering:

1. Tell us something about yourself:
2. Likes (characters, ships, genres, TV shows, actors, real life stuff):
3. Dislikes (characters, ships, genres, TV shows, actors, real life stuff) :
4. What got you interested in Smallville?
5. What are your favorite SV episodes?
6. What SV fanfic do you reread most often?
7. Random facts (favorite food, color you wouldn't be caught dead wearing, pets' names, number of pairs of shoes you own, where you would live if you were a billionaire, etc.)

Happy delurking day! Come join the party!

I can't believe that I haven't dropped by before now. I also can't believe that the SV social is still going on! Holy crap! I'm seriously impressed with you all!!

So, to answer the questions:

1. Something about myself: I'm a grad student (just go my first MA!! yay!!) who is having a crisis on what she wants to do (Boo!!). I like India and Cultural Anthropology and Words and irony and people. I like people a LOT, but I'm also a bit shy around big groups of people. Like - say -- this crazy thing. Aiee! I'm also a dogcathorseprettymuchanyanimal person. ;P

2. I love CLex. I love Lex and Clark is nearly any incarnation. I LOVE to hate Lionel! There was never a darker day than when SV tried to convince us that Lionel had reformed. The very idea!!

I'm also a fan of Chloe and occasionally Lois, though I often feel that her character is too heavily written.

I also love making icons and fanart.

3. I dislike the way Lana is portrayed on the show. Everytime I begin to think that she has the potential to be interesting, the tensions and consequences that made her interesting vanish. It's a damn shame. Not the least because we have to watch so much of her screen time. I also dislike cruelty, rudeness and people who try to prop themselves up by knocking others down. Seriously not cool in my book.

4. How did I get interested in SV? Hah! Funny story! I was lurking big time in Highlander, where I was eating up the Methos/Duncan fic and feeling sad that I hadn't actually seen many of the episodes. There was a huge uprising of talk about Teh Gay on Smallville and after a year of resisting, I kind of started watching the second season. It certainly helped that CLex had much of the fantastic epic conflict that I liked in HL. It also helped that several HL writers were there to bridge me to knew authors. Not I'd have to say that I'm way more SV than I ever was HL. :)

5. Perry! Why does no one ever say Perry? I loved it! Lex comes to Clark's rescue when Perry is grilling Clark in the bar. He looks like a fucking avenging angel! And then when he goes postal on Perry to protect Clark. Plus, I like dork!Clark loosing control of his abilities.

I also like Heat, Zero, Transference, and Prodigal.

6. Which fanfic do I read most? That's hard. I reread most stories. But, if I have to go for which ones I've read most... Well. I reread "Seedy" and "Tomorrowland" from Rhi pretty frequently. I've also reread "Omiai" and "All American" from Too Much Plor and nearly all of Lenore's stuff, but the one single fic that I have read more than any other is Jenn's "Fetish." Clark touching Lex = GUH!

7. Random facts. Crap. Um. Ask me questions or name a topic and I'll give a random fact in response.
('Cause right now I got nothing.)

Holy crap, you just pushed the comments to page 4!

Glad you could make it!

You're right, Perry is hilarious. I wonder why it doesn't make most people's lists?

Random question: whose your favorite theorist in anthropology?
beet: (MP- India Rising)

Re: I'll be last!

[personal profile] beet 2006-05-27 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
It wasn't me!!! *frantic look around* It was HER! *points up*

However, on things I will take credit for... My fav theorist is either Lila Abu-Lughod or Nancy Scheper-Hughes, though I like Paul Farmer's writing a lot. And my favorite ethnography by huge heaps and bounds is Phillipe Bourgois' "In Search of Respect". Mmmmm! Tasty anthropologists!

Re: I'll be last!

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2006-05-27 05:50 am (UTC)(link)
I also like Abu-Lughod a lot. I haven't read Bourgois, but that book looks really interesting--I'll have to add it to my ever-growing list!

It's really fantastic. I have huge admiration for him and his work. I should warn you that it is also painful at times.

Are you interested in Anthro... well. That's dumb. Clearly you are interested in Anthro. Who is your fav theorist and what is your interest? :)

Re: I'll be last!

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2006-05-27 04:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I took some cultural studies classes in the 90s where we read a fair bit of ethnography, but most of it is pretty ancient stuff like Geertz and Barbara Myerhoff (who I really do love, mostly for "Number Our Days" rather than her stuff on the Huichol.

Yes!! I love wooden rollercoasters best. The loop-de-loop ones just don't impress me. They look scary when you are outside the gates, but when you're on the coaster, you can't feel anything. Big hills, on the other hand...! Wheeee!

I also love that bastard child of rollercoasters and swimming pool - The log ride. :D

Too true. Not that Lionel is unmitigated evil, but seriously, good-Lionel is boooooring.

Lex comes to Clark's rescue when Perry is grilling Clark in the bar. He looks like a fucking avenging angel!

That is indeed a cool scene.

I was in India when I was 11. My parents worked at an international school there for six months. We were in Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu. So it was rather a while ago. I hear the town has a gotten a lot more built up since then, and I bet if I actually went back there, it would be so different. We were also in Mahabalipuram for a bit, and I think Delhi. I'm not entirely sure, since I was a kid and so wasn't always paying attention.

I always leave off some of the best eps when I try to think of my favorites. Perry is definitely one of them. I want him to come back and do another ep now that Lois is on (if they would only *please* let her get interested in journalism.) And Heat. How could I have forgotten that one? Clark is too cute in it. But isn't he always?

1. Tell us something about yourself: I procrastinate 24/7.

2. Likes: Clex, Lex, the Luthors, horror stories, anime, manga, Sumeragi Subaru, CLAMP, chocolate chip cookies.

3. Dislikes: Canon Lexana literally makes me sick to my stomach. SV seasons 4 & 5. Hot and humid weather. Passive agressive whining. Rudeness and stupidity. Mornings.

4. What got you interested in Smallville? The fic and the episode reviews in TWoP. Afterwards, I stayed for Lex and the fabulous fandom. I can probably attribute a third of my love for the Clex to Thamiris' glorious meta.

5. What are your favorite SV episodes? Pilot, Hourglass, Heat, Lineage, Prodigal, Shattered, Asylum, Memoria.

6. What SV fanfic do you reread most often? Rhiannonhero's Seven Hurricane and RivkaT's No Darker Than Yours. Not to say those are my only favorites, as some fics that I love are just too painful to bear rereading.

7. Random facts: I'm currently obsessed with The Smiths song Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want. It's so adolescent and self-indulgent--reminds me a lot of myself actually. I'm tempted to get an mp3 player but I keep telling myself that I don't really NEED one but then I remember going through a weekend without access to my music collection and nearly decapitating some random passerby in my distress. Oh and I just posted a Clark/Lex fanmix here (http://phantomwise.livejournal.com/87787.html?mode=reply). [/shameless plug]

yay! music! This ties in well with my new obsession with fanmixes.

I have *two* mp3 players (technically they my parents but they can't work out how to use them *wins*), one with my happy songs and one for when i'm being maudlin, I might upgrade them into one bigger one. I can't handle not having music with me. It's very scary.

Hideously late, as always

[identity profile] jakrar.livejournal.com 2006-05-31 01:20 pm (UTC)(link)
1. Tell us something about yourself:

I'm in my late 40s, and have been married to the same man for over 25 years. I've been a slasher all my life: when I was a child, it was always two men I imagined hugging and kissing, long before I found out just what came after that. I have a cat who carries socks.

2. Likes (characters, ships, genres, TV shows, actors, real life stuff):

I love Lex. I love CLex. I can enjoy Bruce/Lex, as long as it doesn't interfere with the CLex (that is, as long as Lex hasn't met Clark yet, or is with Bruce because he thinks he can't have Clark). And I can sometimes appreciate Lionel/Lex, if it's written as undeniably twisted and wrong.

3. Dislikes (characters, ships, genres, TV shows, actors, real life stuff) :

As a general rule, I don't like threesomes. And I usually can't stand Clark with anyone but Lex. Also, I have a problem with characters who are nasty to Lex, so I've never liked Jonathan, I stopped liking Pete when he started griping about Lex (and that was AFTER Lex had saved his life in "Jitters"!), and I stopped liking Chloe when she climbed on the 'Lex is evil' bandwagon. Also, lately, I just want to smack Clark.

4. What got you interested in Smallville?

Not really being a Superman fan, I'd paid no attention to the ads for SMALLVILLE before it aired. But I happened to flip to the right channel just as the pilot episode was starting, so I decided -- for lack of anything better to do -- to take a look. As soon as I'd seen the accident that introduced Clark and Lex, I was hooked. The kiss of life before they'd even been introduced? MR's gorgeous Lex? TW's ultra-pretty Clark? Oh, yeah!

5. What are your favorite SV episodes?

The pilot, Jitters, Shattered, Asylum, Transference.

6. What SV fanfic do you reread most often?

"Divergence" and the rest of the 'Identical' series by Lanning Cook, "Planets Crashing to Dust" by Brighid, "Incarnadine" and "Switch: A Comedy of Terror" by RivkaT, "Aphrodesia" and "That Old Schizophrenic Jealousy" by Lenore, "Along Came a Spider" by Thamiris, "Champagne Wishes" by Te, "Closer to Breathing" by Jenn, "No Obstacle" and "Backfired" by Bren Antrim, "Mouse: A Definition" by Henry Jones, Jr.

7. Random facts (favorite food, color you wouldn't be caught dead wearing, pets' names, number of pairs of shoes you own, where you would live if you were a billionaire, etc.)

I'm on medication for OCD. I have virtually no maternal instincts when it comes to human children, but very strong maternal instincts when it comes to cats. And I hate moving (and travel!) so much that, if I were given a billion dollars, I'd still stay right where I am.
