Smallville: Odyssey

It will never be the same show without Lex, but I think I'm really going to enjoy this season!

Of the shallow

1. Ok, someone is writing Tessa/Lois slash as we speak right? Because holy hell that scene was hot! And not just because of Lois' French maid uniform, which strained my credulity for a second, but I suppose maybe Lex might hire maids in precisely that costume? Okay, maybe not, but I guess I don't really care if they're going to be so blatantly femslashy. Plus she was kind of smokin' in it.

2. JUSTIN HARTLEY! Justin Hartley Justin Hartley Justin Hartley. God, I had forgotten how completely gorgeous he is. And I had no idea he had a long enough part to be in the credits--I was only spoiled to the extent that he was in the opening episode. Hurray!

3. Humina, Mountain Man Clark slinging those crates in Russia. DAMN. Just DAMN.

4. And that whole scene in Russia convinced me I know where Lex is. See, those Russian mafia could see Mountain Man Clark was built for manual labor, but Lex's more delicate form clearly means he gets sent to the brothels. The very exclusive ones, of course (and he will be escaping soon but shut up. I am enjoying this mental image. If they can blatantly indulge some Clark!girls' TC fantasies, they can give me prostitute!Lex in a high-class bordello).

5. Lois again, in the tag scene at the DP: HOT DAMN. HOLY HOTNESS BATMAN. They finally got her hair perfect, perfect, perfect, and she looked amazing and iconic and I am SO looking forward to Clois banter across those desks this season, I cannot even tell you.

Of the slightly more substantive

1. New villains

I was spoiled for the existence of Tess, though not much about her storyline, and I think I like her. I certainly loved her interactions with Lois and with male Lexminion, anyway. The actress seems pretty solid to me. My only quibble was that though I recognized the symbolism of her taking over the Luthor mansion, it really MAKES NO FRIGGIN SENSE for her to be there. At this point, they might as well all move lock-and-stock to Metropolis. I know they don't have an unlimited budget, but for Pete's sake they already have a Luthorcorp set. Also, as long as I'm griping, since the whole purpose of dust covers is to prevent dust from settling on furniture, you don't generally find big clouds of dust UNDER THEM, oh Smallville set dressers. (I get it, symbolism again, but again it's DUMB symbolism.)

2. Old heroes

I have to admit, I am a little sad at the disbanding of Ollie's League--though it's very good that it means Clark will go his own way and not rely on them in his path to superherodom this year--but what really broke my heart was Martian Manhunter's sacrifice. Oh, J'onn. For a minute I thought how easily he saved Clark and restored his powers was lame deus ex machina, but the fact that he gave up his own powers for Clark really redeemed that for me.

3. New powers

I have to confess, given how ridiculously divided the fandom is lately over Chloe, I'm more than a little afraid to see people's responses to the fact that she has even more new powers. *Sigh* I don't really mind this particular plot development, because super computer skills is a much more logical meteor mutation for her than healing powers, so maybe they're going to give up the one for the other? (I wasn't sure whether to read her inability to heal Clark as a loss of that particular power or as a product of Clark's Kryptonian-ness. I guess the latter, but I think it would actually work better for her storyline if it was the former).

By the way, excellent bit of CREEPTASTICNESS, not to mention continuity, to coerce Chloe into finding Ollie by using her mom's spinal fluid. Ew ew ew ew ew, but bravo, show, for going there. Clearly Lex's remaining minions are even more ethically challenged than he was, toward the end. I also really liked the fact that Chloe was tricked into believing she was in a "low-rent Gitmo" when really it was Luthorcorp holding her.

4. Reflections of the past

Part of me was yelling at Clark, while he was charging off to rescue Chloe on his own, "you idiot, didn't you learn anything from the last time you were mortal and trying to rescue Chloe? You know, when you ended up dead?"--so if anything, I was amused that he ended up dead again.

And yet, I do love the heroic part of him that really will risk his life to save people. Because we all know it's not his powers that make him a hero, it's his heart. Even if it does mean he gets shot in it again.

I did love the flashes he got of his parents and Lana when he was dying, not just because it underscore that many of the people he's loved have left him, but because it was a really nice way to remind the audience that even though those actors/characters have (mostly) left the show, they still helped shape Clark (and the show) to be what it is today.

5. Moving into the future
I'm pretty sure I could hear certain fans (you know who you are) cheering at that conversation Clark had with J'onn at the end of the episode, about his need to stop holding onto the past and to move forward to his future, unguided by anyone else. YES! It's finally the season for Clark to embrace his destiny. YAY!!! Oh, and he's going to be working at the DP! Yay times a billion!

I also loved the way Lois is pretty much already there. We got to see her in stealthy investigative reporter mode (and you go, Lois, for getting that flash drive out right under Tessa's nose--I just think you should have taken all of them!), in righteous defending-her-cousin mode, in undercover mode again (and how much do I *love* *love* *love* that she might very well have managed to get Chloe out on her own, without any superheroic help?), and then in sophisticated (and gorgeous) reporter mode at the Daily Planet. Oh, man, just for Lois alone this season is going to TOTALLY ROCK THE HOUSE.

The only plotline I was completely uninterested in this episode was the Chimmy wedding (Really? Really? Do they have to go there? BORING), but even that, at least, was in keeping with this theme of moving into the future, so I have to grant them props for that.

Really, if season 8 continues in this vein, I am totally onboard.

Disclaimer: almost entirely unspoiled here, so I could be rampantly speculating about things that have already been revealed. *g*

I, for one, am utterly fascinated by this. I was pretty ho-hum when I was vaguely spoilered for Chloe getting more powers, and wasn't all that enthusiastic that they'd be able to do it believably, but it was all intriguey and brilliant. She just passed out for no apparent reason and woke up with a new power? With her trademark Chloe suspicious slidey-eyes face of not telling the whole truth and nothing but the truth? After passing out at the end of last season post-Brainiac!attack, and then suddenly coming to to find she's faster than Luthorcorps fastest computers? It's suspicious and too coincidental and I like it.

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2008-09-19 05:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, yes, she might be harboring Brainiac! That would be quite a twist. And what a fitting punishment for Brainiac, to wake up and find himself married to Jimmy Olsen

I don't remember exactly where, but yes! Clearly we need to charter a plane to Russia for Lex fangirls!

[identity profile] myownghost.livejournal.com 2008-09-19 11:57 am (UTC)(link)
oooOOOooo, lex in a russian bordello! what a luscious thought. i'll hang onto that. :)

yes, there was definitely a sexual vibe between tess and lois in that early scene. remember lois in red leather (or spandex maybe?) with that villainess at the underground fight club? same kind of vibe.

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2008-09-19 05:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm all in favor of slashy vibes between Lois and other women.

I didn't know you were still watching! I thought you were one of the folks who gave up when MR left for the bordello.

Speaking of which...are we completely sure that MR isn't actually being held hostage by crazed fangirls, and that's the real reason MR is gone from the show?

[identity profile] myownghost.livejournal.com 2008-09-19 05:44 pm (UTC)(link)
i've been in several fandoms. it seems to me that MR is loved by his fans in a way most other stars aren't, maybe because he clearly likes us back and makes himself available to us. mmmm, available to us.... ;)

as for watching the show, i'll probably continue to, so long as tom's still on it and they give us justin hartley often enough. i liked hearing him speak (phonetic) russian. *g*

I agree about the Tess/Lois slash. You just know Smallville is back in full force when there's not only slash (Ollie/Clark), but femslash (Tess/Lois) as well. Plus, there's also Black Canary teasing Green Arrow and Aquaman that if they're done stroking each other they should go save Clark. \o/

Wow, I'm impressed you managed to stay unspoiled about Justin.

See, those Russian mafia could see Mountain Man Clark was built for manual labor, but Lex's more delicate form clearly means he gets sent to the brothels.

Yet another fan fic that needs to be written. >:)

I have to confess, given how ridiculously divided the fandom is lately over Chloe, I'm more than a little afraid to see people's responses to the fact that she has even more new powers.

*g* I just think that this makes it even more easier for them to use her as an exposition girl.

I'm pretty sure I could hear certain fans (you know who you are) cheering at that conversation Clark had with J'onn at the end of the episode, about his need to stop holding onto the past and to move forward to his future, unguided by anyone else. YES!

Best part of the episode!
Followed closely by that last Clois scene - filled with teasing, friendship and smiling, happy Clark!

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2008-09-19 05:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I was kind of schizophrenic about spoilers this summer. I read all the ones that were just casting spoilers, but for the most part I stayed unspoiled. I do remember reading some conversation about JH becoming part of the regular cast, but then I read something else that made me think he was just going to be guest starring.

But yay for slashiness and character development and Clois!

All I have to say is that I totally agree!!!!

Hee! I knew someone would appreciate that little bit of speculation.

[identity profile] bop-radar.livejournal.com 2008-09-20 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
I guess I don't really care if they're going to be so blatantly femslashy
Hee! I was surprised (and pleased) by the sudden injection of femslash. So far that's the only potentially interesting thing about Tess for me.

I had no idea he had a long enough part to be in the credits--I was only spoiled to the extent that he was in the opening episode. Hurray!
Me too! Me too! HOORAY! I cheered. And I love that they consider his defining shot to be his shirtlessness. *beams* He's such a joy to watch.

Lex's more delicate form clearly means he gets sent to the brothels
Hahahha, THAT MUST BE IT. *collapses in laughter*

it really MAKES NO FRIGGIN SENSE for her to be there.
It doesn't. And I'm sulky and annoyed about it. I think it's a BIG mistake. SV has respected the power of spatial dynamics for so long. I found this an insult to Lex's memory. I think we're supposed to be won over by her uber-loyalty to Lex, but we've seen that so many times before from his minions and it doesn't necessarily make them good minions. I don't like. *sulk*

since the whole purpose of dust covers is to prevent dust from settling on furniture, you don't generally find big clouds of dust UNDER THEM, oh Smallville set dressers. (I get it, symbolism again, but again it's DUMB symbolism.)
Yeah, it's dumb, and Smallville can do better than that. Or used to be able to. *worried*

, I am a little sad at the disbanding of Ollie's League
Oh! I kind of thought they'd be back. I mean... I thought they'd split up for a some episodes, but I expect to see them form again later in the season...

super computer skills is a much more logical meteor mutation for her than healing powers, so maybe they're going to give up the one for the other
I'm hoping that's the case, and if so I would be a bit happier with it--it would perhaps indicate that the writing team have realised that that would have been a much more sensible power for her to have had from the start. Rewatching the ep it seems... possible? I don't know.

You know, when you ended up dead?"--so if anything, I was amused that he ended up dead again.
Haha, me too! I was so amused. I'm too fond of him to really give him flak for this, though I do think it was mindbogglingly stupid (if heroic). Somewhere, Jor-El is sighing...

she might very well have managed to get Chloe out on her own, without any superheroic help?
I know! It seems like it could be a season for power women, for once. Even though I don't like Tess and am concerned as always about Chloe plot, I do like that they've potentially got three powerful female cast members.

Oh, man, just for Lois alone this season is going to TOTALLY ROCK THE HOUSE.
I agree. I think I disliked more about the set-up and episode than you, but I'm still EUPHORIC about the potential of the season.

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2008-09-20 07:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I love that they consider his defining shot to be his shirtlessness. *beams* He's such a joy to watch.

Definitely! I clearly need to get a shirtless Ollie icon, too.

I'm sulky and annoyed about it.

I've seen this response a lot, and it makes me think the writers are seriously miscalculating how much the audience is missing Lex. They're thinking we'll take to Tess as a stand-in/avatar of our desire to find him, but just based on the number of negative responses I've seen to this particular scene, I think they seriously miscalculated.

I really hope you're right about the Justice League just temporarily disbanding, because I actually really liked them in this ep more than I have in a long time. A.C. didn't even annoy me!

I thought you might appreciate that line! I do actually love that he is heroic without powers, but on the other hand I really want him to use the heroic power of forethought and learning from his past mistakes.

I'm hoping that's the case, and if so I would be a bit happier with it--it would perhaps indicate that the writing team have realised that that would have been a much more sensible power for her to have had from the start. Rewatching the ep it seems... possible? I don't know.

I really hope so, because two major powers is too much. UNLESS--as shopfront suggested above--they're actually setting Chloe up to be completely taken over by Brainiac. (I knew I should have rewatched the season 7 finale before I watched this, because I totally forgot about that whole encounter before I read LaT's review. *Headdesk*)

I'm going to respond to the other stuff on your review.

[identity profile] bop-radar.livejournal.com 2008-09-20 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I think they seriously miscalculated.
So do I. It actually seems like a really naive writing mistake. Don't try and replace a really strong cast member! Create a new dynamic with a different character. And her being a woman is not different enough!

I really hope you're right about the Justice League just temporarily disbanding, because I actually really liked them in this ep more than I have in a long time. A.C. didn't even annoy me!
I don't know why I thought that... just a feeling. I can't imagine them being disbanded for the whole season. I'm hoping there are eps with at least one or two of the JL-ers popping in to Metropolis. And yes, AC did not annoy! Hooray!

I do actually love that he is heroic without powers, but on the other hand I really want him to use the heroic power of forethought and learning from his past mistakes.
*giggles again* Absolutely! I wouldn't want Clark to lose his heroism-without-powers, but he could *add* to that repertoire. ;) I am SO amused by his track record as a human!

hey're actually setting Chloe up to be completely taken over by Brainiac
Yikes! Possible. (They made a point of showing his attack in the 'previously') That would be... a bit ... well it would make sense because Brainiac survives at all costs. And I'd like it in some ways because Brainiac stands a far better chance of being a cool villain than Tess... hmm, I need to think more on this.

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2008-09-22 04:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't try and replace a really strong cast member! Create a new dynamic with a different character. And her being a woman is not different enough!

I don't actually think this is what they're trying to do--I actually think what they're going for is continuity. Because if Lex did mysteriously vanish, there would have been some response from Luthercorp. And I kind of like the idea that Lex has built up Luthorcorp to the point that it will continue despite his absence (since we know that he can't be dead). I want to see what they'll do with Tess, but I'm not immediately opposed to her.

[identity profile] bop-radar.livejournal.com 2008-09-23 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
"More duplicitous than Lex ever was"--that's what Oliver said about Tess. And she's taken over the physical space and the exact role that Lex filled. Yes, someone would have taken over Luthorcorp in Lex's absence, and they would have searched for him. But they need not have focussed on that in the Smallville plot--they could have just made passing mention of it. Likewise, they didn't need to set up Tess as Clark's next enemy immediately. They could have at least put that one on the slow boil for a while... she felt completely forced down our throats in this episode. I think someone else said 'too much, too soon' and I'd have to agree with that. The combined effect read to me as if the writing team's anxieties were writ large: OMG, no Lex! *panic* What if we get a new CEO of Luthorcorp and just say they are as evil as Lex?! Immediately!

There are a lot of ways this plot could have worked better for me--for instance, if they'd cast an older woman, or one that was not obviously Lex's 'type'. I find it hard to buy that one of his army of brunette minions, one we've never seen before, has risen from the ranks this way. We've seen them rise and fall before! To do so, she would have to be truly ruthless and self-interested and she's not shown either capacity yet. I suppose she got rid of male!minion but compared to Lex she still seems like small fry.

And, I'm sorry, the writing team invited that direct comparison when they had her fill his shoes and then told us she was worse than him.

Gah. /rant

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2008-09-23 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I suspect we're just not going to agree on this. For example, I've seen lots of people saying the "more duplicitous than Lex" comment suggests the writers are saying Tess is better than Lex, but I really don't agree. I think I read that as "Lex always lied by telling the truth, while they just lie to lie" or something like that.

And for me, if they had gone immediately to a non-Luthorcorp villain, that would have been erasing Lex more surely than having his minions take over--especially in an episode which is all about searching for Clark. If the whole JL was looking for Clark and no one was looking for Lex, that would have really been like an erasure of him, for me.

[identity profile] bop-radar.livejournal.com 2008-09-24 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you, it's helpful for me to hear that perspective, even if I don't agree. I will have to reconcile myself to Tess since she's obviously going to be a big part of this season.

[identity profile] chrysalitron.livejournal.com 2008-09-21 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
I'm kinda liking Tess, too. I didn't think I would, especially considering she's supposed to be the New Lex and all, and I'm already depressed enough over that. But I was surprised by the fact that I WAS interested in her. We'll see if this lasts. Within the next few weeks, I might very well be like "I hate Tess. Bring Lex back! And Lionel!"

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2008-09-22 04:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm sure it's quite possible they'll fuck up her storyline--these are the Smallville writers after all--but for the moment I am liking her too.

[identity profile] seacrystal.livejournal.com 2008-09-21 12:36 pm (UTC)(link)
#5 is definitely the highlight of the episode for me, and I love all the definitive scenes about Clark and his decisions -- the scene with MM, the JL and with Lois at the DP of course.

And oh, all the pretty broke my brain too. I wonder why is it that I often forget just how totally GUH Justin is.

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2008-09-22 04:24 pm (UTC)(link)
If they continue to do so well with the Clark plotline, I know *lots* of people who are going to be really happy with this season.

[identity profile] serenography.livejournal.com 2008-09-21 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Ok, someone is writing Tessa/Lois slash as we speak right? Because holy hell that scene was hot!
I'm not even a huge femslash fan, but I'd definitely read that one! I was actually shocked they went there, but smiling at the same time. :D

3. Humina, Mountain Man Clark slinging those crates in Russia. DAMN. Just DAMN.

EXACTLY. The man really IS an alien, I swear.

LMAO! I swear, you NEED to write this, m'dear.

because super computer skills is a much more logical meteor mutation for her than healing powers, so maybe they're going to give up the one for the other?

I think (but don't know for sure) that they are switching her abilities, from healer to superbrain. I agree that this is a much better fit for her.

but because it was a really nice way to remind the audience that even though those actors/characters have (mostly) left the show, they still helped shape Clark (and the show) to be what it is today.

*hugs you* *blows nose*

Oh, man, just for Lois alone this season is going to TOTALLY ROCK THE HOUSE.

I hope they really do give her more than her contracted 13 eps. She's become one of the most interesting characters on the show, particularly when she's interacting with Clark.

Chimmy wedding? Meh. I doubt it will actually happen (to completion). SV just doesn't do happily ever after...

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2008-09-22 04:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm really hoping you're right on the Chimmy wedding, because BLECH. And as for Chloe's new powers...I'm kind of hoping they're setting up for something like the return of Brainiac (or maybe that she goes crazy at some point because she can't handle all the info), because otherwise it seems like a little much, and I say that as a big Chloe fan. But I guess we'll see.

Tom Welling's prettiness really can't be explained without the alien explanation, can it?

[identity profile] latxcvi.livejournal.com 2008-09-22 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Ok, someone is writing Tessa/Lois slash as we speak right? Because holy hell that scene was hot!

I was kind of fascinated by the way Cassidy Freeman chose to read that line about Lois playing dress up. As written, it was probably supposed to be derisive. But she made it sound more like Tess was intrigued by the prospect that Lois likes the play dress up. The whole scene was slashy, with the way the two of them kept looking each other up and down, but that line reading in particular stood out to me.

Lois' French maid uniform, which strained my credulity for a second, but I suppose maybe Lex might hire maids in precisely that costume? Okay, maybe not, but I guess I don't really care if they're going to be so blatantly femslashy. Plus she was kind of smokin' in it.

I loved the uniform. I don't even see it as all that implausible. I mean, someone probably does regularly clean the mansion. It's not outside the realm of possibility that they do so while wearing a uniform. Probably not a uniform with a skirt that short, mind you, but I can believe they'd wear uniforms period.

3. Humina, Mountain Man Clark slinging those crates in Russia. DAMN. Just DAMN.

I KNOW. I didn't think it was possible for Tom Welling to get more handsome, but he somehow managed to do exactly that during the hiatus.

what really broke my heart was Martian Manhunter's sacrifice. Oh, J'onn. For a minute I thought how easily he saved Clark and restored his powers was lame deus ex machina, but the fact that he gave up his own powers for Clark really redeemed that for me.

Me, too and I'll tell you, if the creative team so much as even thinks about stalling Clark any time this season after making the decision to strip Martian Manhunter of his powers for Clark's sake, I. will. cut. a bitch.

Oh, no, Regan was following Lex's lead. He said as much -- Lex was the one who had the presence of mind to harvest Moira's spinal fluid. The only reason to do that is if he suspected that it was the seat of her powers.

And yet, I do love the heroic part of him that really will risk his life to save people. Because we all know it's not his powers that make him a hero, it's his heart. Even if it does mean he gets shot in it again.

Yeah, it's easy to ding Clark for this, but if he didn't have that quality about him -- his willingness to charge in when someone's in danger even if he doesn't have powers -- then he wouldn't be capable of becoming Superman.

I did love the flashes he got of his parents and Lana when he was dying, not just because it underscore that many of the people he's loved have left him, but because it was a really nice way to remind the audience that even though those actors/characters have (mostly) left the show, they still helped shape Clark (and the show) to be what it is today.

Absolutely. And It was a nice call back to Exodus, when Jor-El told Clark that Jonathan, Martha and Lana had helped shape him up to that point in his journey.

I'm pretty sure I could hear certain fans (you know who you are) cheering at that conversation Clark had with J'onn at the end of the episode, about his need to stop holding onto the past and to move forward to his future, unguided by anyone else. YES!

Was I really that loud about it? ;-)

I also loved the way Lois is pretty much already there. ... Oh, man, just for Lois alone this season is going to TOTALLY ROCK THE HOUSE.

As the kids these days say, "Word," to your entire paragraph about Lois.

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2008-09-23 05:24 pm (UTC)(link)
loved the uniform. I don't even see it as all that implausible.

Uniforms, yes, but that was *clearly* the fetish French maid uniform, and not just because of the short skirt--also because of the headband and the coloring. Someone in the costume department was having fun, or at least thought Lois was having fun with the undercover thing. I mean, she even started talking to Tess with the fake French accent!

I KNOW. I didn't think it was possible for Tom Welling to get more handsome, but he somehow managed to do exactly that during the hiatus.

Clearly the "actor" thing is a cover. TW must actually *be* Kal-El, because that kind of pretty is simply unearthly.

Me, too and I'll tell you, if the creative team so much as even thinks about stalling Clark any time this season after making the decision to strip Martian Manhunter of his powers for Clark's sake, I. will. cut. a bitch.

This is exactly why the season 9 rumors make me nervous. Maybe if the rumors persist we can take up a collection to fly you to Vancouver and have a little talk with the producers. :D

Was I really that loud about it? ;-)

I almost specifically namechecked you when I wrote that paragraph, but then decided the list of people cheering would be pretty long and I didn't want to leave anyone out. But yeah, I could hear you all the way on the opposite coast. :D

I wrote in my review tonight how I was totally feeling the slashy vibe between Lois/Tess and how I couldn't understand why the Russian smuggler didn't just pimp Clarks ultra fine ass out. He certainly would have gotten a bigger return then just using him for cheap labor. However I kinda love your idea of Lex in a brothel so I'm convinced their both there now:)

As for Tess, surprisingly enough I do like her so far. Here's hoping it stays that way.

Didn't she look gorgeous? I'm so excited to see where the writers are going to take her storyline this season, and the Clois was just exquisite.
