Things I LOVED with a burning passion

1.CLARK. Pretty much everything about him in this episode, but especially:
a. Clark defining saving people as "helping them find their way back to the right side." And then demonstrating that in action. Oh, Clark. Just when I think I cannot love you more.

b. Clark going undercover, because OH YES. This is the Clark that becomes the Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter! And I know people are missing Lois and I agree it sucks ED isn't in more eps, but I do love that it means Clark gets to do some growing in his investigative skills on his own, not just as her sidekick.

c. Clark getting to wear new outfits. Because as lovely as he is in red and blue, and even in the suit, I liked that light blue shirt he had on at the dinner at Danny's house, and I LOVED the grey T-shirt over the long-sleeved white shirt. Also, he looks pretty damn good in uniform. HUMINA.

2. Lana and Tess confrontations. Damn. I really think I could watch a whole season of them sparring, both verbally and physically. (PLEASE TELL ME SOMEONE IS WRITING THE SLASH RIGHT NOW? PRETTY PLEASE?) I mean, Lois v. Tess is fun, don't get me wrong, but the Lex factor makes Lana v. Tess so much more compelling to me, and it's really really going to make me miss KK more when she's gone.

3. TESS. That whole speech to Lex at the end: "I've done everything you've ever asked--you've seen that with your own eyes and apparently with mine. Not anymore. I hope you watch with rapt attention as your life disappears before your eyes. Goodbye Lex--I loved you, you son of a bitch" And then proposing a merger with Ollie. Damn. You do *not* want to cross this woman.

4. Ollie: you just make me happy every time you appear in an episode. But especially when you (a) talk Clark out of his guilt-spiral about J'onn; (b) take Clark's advice and trust that Danny can be a better person; (c) interact with Tess in any way, shape, or form. *Happy sigh*

5. Chloe: I love that you have Lois's back.

6. J'onn J'onzz: I loved that speech at the end, not in the least because JUSTICE LEAGUE HERE WE COME. (Ok, they probably wrote this ep before Tom signed for s9, if he has actually done so, but that's ok. I still want to see the JL spinoff afterwards).

Things I loved slightly less than the above, but still a lot

1. How refreshing to see an actual family in Metropolis in their natural setting! I especially loved it because it gives a much fuller picture of who Clark is saving when he saves Danny--not just him but his whole family.

2. "Cops got rules, capes don't." My first reaction was, hey, GA doesn't have a cape and they don't even know what red-blue blue WEARS--but then we got reminded about Warrior Angel, so I realized the metaphorical capes made a lot more sense, and I really like that line.

3. I wasn't at all bothered by the Clana kiss, since it's obviously not going anywhere--KK has what, 2 more episodes in the series?--and since there is not, yet, anything spoken between Lois and Clark, he's not cheating or anything. And hell, I wouldn't mind watching those two very very pretty people have farewell sex, for that matter, but I'll take a kiss.

Oh god, I don't mind Clana, or the fact that they kissed, but I don't think I can handle sex LOL

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2009-01-23 06:03 am (UTC)(link)
See, I think there should be about ten times more sex on this show, but I of course would never wish for Clana sex without hoping for eventual Clois sex.

I wouldn't mind more sex on the show but I wouldn't want everyone turning into slags because not everyone is slaggy.

No one I know would call sleeping with your boyfriend slaggy.

[identity profile] awehla.livejournal.com 2009-01-26 12:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh of course not I mean people going from one partner to another like they do on Hollyoaks where you end up with characters who have slept with practically all the main characters. That's what I object to because it's not realistic and gets farcical.

I love you so so much for putting the Clana kiss into perspective for those that are bound to rant and rave about how aweful Clark is for doing that. Lois isn't his wife, his girlfriend, and hell, he doesn't even really know how she feels about him, so in my eyes I saw it as Clark going for what he knows. He KNOWS how Lana feels about him, and aside from her secret actions, he can read her better than he can read Lois (not the least of which because he's known Lana longer and Lois isn't the most forthcoming about her feelings).

So I pretty much liked this episode a lot, especially with everything you said about Clark in your number 1 reason (and I'm pretty sure you were reading my mind there, buddy. gonna need you to stop it, right now.) Clark being so Supermanly always pushes my love of an episode up a few notches. I also loved that the episode had human bad guys, no powers, no kryptonite hold him back. And it took me to the end of the episode to realize that "Danny" was Dan Turpin, who I haven't read much of in the comics, but I adored him in Superman the Animated Series, so it was awesome to see how he starts out on SV. Plus, it gives Clark a great source for journalism purposes (not that SV wil likely grow from that, but it's nice to imagine).

Yeah, and not just going for what he knows, but resolving feelings that were left pretty unresolved. I mean, it's not like he and Lana formally broke up; she was infected by Brainiac, she recovered and left him a Dear John letter, and now she's back. It doesn't surprise me at all that he is still drawn to her; the Lois stuff is new enough that it hasn't fully displaced his feelings for Lana.

And like I said below in a comment, if KK was around for good I could see the cause for complaint, but since we know she only has 2 more eps I don't really see this as a threat to the Clois.

I'll have to look up Dan Turpin--I'm not familiar with him.

and they don't even know what red-blue blue WEARS

Well, when we saw Ollie playing the red-blue blur in 'Identity' he was wearing a red cape along with the blue leather hoodie jacket.

And I agree with you on the Clana kiss. Everyone needs to stop groaning about it because we know when it ends this time it's going to be final. I also believe that they'll both end up better people this time, there won't be any hurt feelings or the impression that outside factors are keeping them apart.

You are much better at remembering canon details than I am, apparently! Thanks for the fact check.

I would understand people groaning about Clana if KK was back for good, but to me this just reads as Clark resolving his unresolved feelings before he can move on, so I don't actually think it hurts the Clois at all, and it's only fair that the Clana supporters get a nice sendoff.

Mostly I just remembered it since it went all swoopy and flowing when he zip-lined across the street. And I'm always happy to spread a little info around!

This episode was a lot of fun.

Clark was great; really trying to help Danny and look at events from his perspective. At least in the beginning, the cops' attitude is understandable. When you see murderers get off on a technicality, the impulse to choose moral justice over legal justice is very strong, and Clark made that argument very effectively to Oliver, I thought.

Lana and Tess: first of all, yay Lana, for kicking ass and taking names! And the actress playing Tess nailed this episode: cockiness, grief, then anger.

I didn't so much have a problem with Clark and Lana kissing; first off, flirty Lana is the best Lana. She was totally adorable in the final scene. And in any case, Clark's not even dating Lois, and isn't quite sure what he feels for her yet, so it's fine. (Though, on a side-note, I think that Chloe so casually and openly mentioning Lois's feelings for Clark is not on; she knows Lois's aversion to admitting her emotions.)

Definitely. I think they made it easy to see how even a good cop like Danny could start edging toward the dark side, given theit experiences.

I agree with you about Lana's adorableness in the last scene. (I loved the exchange "I couldn't sleep"--"So you came to a coffee shop?") But I am willing to give Chloe a pass on exposing Lois, because she didn't outright say that Lois had feelings for Clark, and for all we know (in an unseen scene) she has told Chloe all about her forced confession to Clark when she was kidnapped earlier this season. And it seemed to me very in character for Chloe, who has been burned by Clark's fixation on Lana before, to be looking out for Lois when it looks like Clark is falling into old habits.

Clark going undercover, because OH YES.

Make that HELLS YES!

Hee! I'd read that. ;)
So I wasn't the only one picking up a vibe from Tess when she was telling Lana that she was both stunning and devious. They actually have a lot in common. LaT made a really nice observation in my LJ about feminist undertones of the scene where Lana empowers Tess with the truth about the Lex abuse they've both been victims of. Good stuff.

nd hell, I wouldn't mind watching those two very very pretty people have farewell sex, for that matter, but I'll take a kiss.

LOL! A very good point. *nods*

Yes, seriously. I've seen a couple people complaining about Tess being just another person in a long line to fall mindlessly into Lana-praise, and my reaction was "did you actually *watch* the same scene I did?" Because clearly Tess is completely intrigued by meeting the one woman whom her idol fell for, which makes perfect character sense for her. Just like the overlay of femslashiness to their interactions fits Tess's established pattern of interactions with pretty much every woman she grapples with on the show.

I'll have to check out LaT's comment.

I seriously, seriously think there should be goodbye sex, but as I said to cloiser_trish above, I just think there should be more sex on this show, period. All these pretty pretty people and their love triangles, come on!!

I won't even front, Nora. When he said that, I raised my hand like I was in church and intoned, "Oh, Superman," in something approximating a high-pitched squeal. Because if that statement isn't the very heart and soul of the character, then I don't know what is.

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2009-01-24 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
YES!! That is totally the heart and soul of Superman. And it also explains, as you pointed out in your post, why they're painting pre-Superman Metropolis like Gotham: because Clark's heroism isn't just that he stamps out crime, it's that he morally uplifts the whole city by making them want to be their best selves.

"Capes" just reminded me of a British comedy called No Heroics where super powered people are called capes.
