Come to the SV social

"I would like to extend to you an invitation to the pants party. The party with the...with the pants. The party with pants."
"Brick, are you saying there's a party in your pants and I'm invited?" (Anchorman)

No, actually the party is in the comments of this entry! Come and join the fun and meet new people in SV fandom. I would especially like to encourage you quiet folks lurking in the back--even those of you without livejournals of your own--to drop by and introduce yourselves. We're all a pretty friendly bunch here, and we like to make new friends. Fandom is more fun when you get involved and meet people, so why don't you stop by and say hi?

Here's a little mini-questionnaire, almost completely stolen from [livejournal.com profile] svmadelyn's glee week social, in case you need a conversation starter, but feel free to answer as many or as few questions as you are interested in answering:

1. Tell us something about yourself:
2. Likes (characters, ships, genres, TV shows, actors, real life stuff):
3. Dislikes (characters, ships, genres, TV shows, actors, real life stuff) :
4. What got you interested in Smallville?
5. What are your favorite SV episodes?
6. What SV fanfic do you reread most often?
7. Random facts (favorite food, color you wouldn't be caught dead wearing, pets' names, number of pairs of shoes you own, where you would live if you were a billionaire, etc.)

Happy delurking day! Come join the party!

Ohmygoodness, too many comments already to read them all. (I'd like to, really, but there's also this work thing that kind of needs some attention...) But what a lovely idea. And as my name suggests, delurking is exactly what I need to do:

1. Tell us something about yourself: I'm 31. I can't believe I'm 31. Blue-state American. Married. Novelist. A big ol' lit-geek, and having ongoing problems reconciling my literary snobbery with my overwhelming love for Smallville.
2. Likes: Getting so immersed in a story that I forget where I am. Lex. Caviar. Peaches. (Not together -- ew.) Clex. Popping bubble-wrap. Swimming. Very hot baths. Being immersed in things, generally.
3. Dislikes: Current American politics (don't get me started). Hypocrisy. Cooked carrots. Running. Most of what passes for "fashion." (And for god's sake, would somebody please introduce Erica Durance to her waistline?)
4. What got you interested in Smallville? Well, believe it or not, my second novel (still in progress) centers on a character who some people believe is a new messiah. And this character, even as a child, knows that there's something different and very special about herself. So when I heard there was a tv show about a young Clark Kent, I felt like I had to watch it. And then I got completely sucked in, because I developed this fascination with Lex and his character arc, and how he'd develop from this cynical but hopeful sweet woobie into a supervillain. As for what drew me into SV fandom (since I'm not fannish about anything else) -- I think I was bored one night and surfed online until I found a story by Lenore. And then I read every single thing Lenore ever wrote in SV, because it was that good. And then I found Te, and Jenn, and Lanning, and then I had to admit I was addicted.
5. What are your favorite SV episodes? Shattered, Memoria, Onyx -- episodes that center on Lex make me happy. Also, Heat, because it just cracks me up.
6. What SV fanfic do you reread most often? It's embarrassing to admit, but I've read Lanning's "Identical" series three times in the last 8 months. And that stuff is LONG -- it's a couple novels' worth of text. But it's SO GOOD. I reread "Sleep While I Drive" when I'm sad and want something sweet to cheer me up.
7. Random facts: Last fall, on a whim, my husband and I both dyed our pubic hair hot pink. It lasted a month or two and made me giggle every time I thought of it -- on a train, at the dentist, etc. We're thinking of doing it again. We're also thinking of maybe having a baby sometime not too far off. The two possibilities are unrelated.

You are so my favourite ninja, you should delurk more. *nods*

[identity profile] slinkling.livejournal.com 2006-05-25 05:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Awww -- nobody's ever told me I'm their favorite ninja before.

[identity profile] arianstarr.livejournal.com 2006-05-25 04:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, I'm not the only one who thinks Heat is funny!

[identity profile] slinkling.livejournal.com 2006-05-25 05:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude, they keep setting up sexy and/or sensitive moments and then Clark ejaculates through his eyes, setting stuff on fire. How is that not hilarious?

It's embarrassing to admit, but I've read Lanning's "Identical" series three times in the last 8 months.
Hey, don't be embarrassed about that. I'll read a good piece more times then that on a regular basis! It's like when you hear a song you really really like and you wanna listen to it enough times that it doesn't have to be playing and you can still hear it. Only with fic its like... you can be anywhere and close your eyes and there's the fic right there

[identity profile] slinkling.livejournal.com 2006-05-25 05:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes -- but I can listen to a song in 4 or 5 minutes; it takes *days* to read through the "Identical" stories. I'm not exaggerating. Seriously, though, if you haven't read them, I can't recommend them highly enough, and that's even with the caveat that the series is still unfinished.

You are the coolest person ever. Hot pink! Please delurk more often.

Hot pink pubes is all it takes?

[identity profile] slinkling.livejournal.com 2006-05-25 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
No doubt it's childish of me, but I've always found amusement in having "I know something you don't know" thoughts when dealing with people who bore me or annoy me or whatever. And somehow, that just trumped every other "I know something you don't" thought I've ever had.

It's the little things, y'know?

[identity profile] slinkling.livejournal.com 2006-05-25 06:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, and I'd also meant to say, thanks.

[identity profile] talitha78.livejournal.com 2006-05-25 07:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Hello, hello, new person! *friends*

[identity profile] slinkling.livejournal.com 2006-05-25 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Hello! *likewise*

[identity profile] norwich36.livejournal.com 2006-05-25 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I have to say, your novel sounds fascinating. And I meant to comment on your post the other day about trying to balance "real writing" with fandom, but this week my comment volume is about 10 times its normal size, so I keep letting other things slip by. But there are actually a number of pro writers who also write fanfic. (It's true that they tend mostly to be in sci-fi/fantasy/horror genres, rather than the literary side, but still, I hope you will consider it!)

Giggling at the hot pink public hair. Doesn't dye down there sting?

[identity profile] slinkling.livejournal.com 2006-05-26 05:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't imagine how you're keeping up with comments as much as you've been doing. I'm a little overwhelmed today having maybe 15 comments in my inbox; last I saw, this post of yours had generated over 1000 responses. That's just crazy. And wonderful, but a lot of crazy.

Re the dye -- I'd been concerned about that too, but the quick version is, no, it doesn't. (It was, however, annoying and messy to do, in part because I was being so careful to keep it away from, er, sensitive areas.)

That's ok! Just let those of us that are ignoring our work come to you! *g*

A big ol' lit-geek, and having ongoing problems reconciling my literary snobbery with my overwhelming love for Smallville.
*glomps* OMG, me too! So much. But I mostly get by... sort of...

Oh, and our favourite eps are very similar--I love Lex-centric eps the best. I can't believe you've read the Identical series three times... in eight months? wow! And yes, Sleep while I drive is definitely a re-read of mine too.

[identity profile] slinkling.livejournal.com 2006-05-26 05:23 pm (UTC)(link)
It's very reassuring to come across other literary snobs who love Smallville. When I was first falling in love with the show, I kept having this "but I used to be so *highbrow*" angst over it. I've mostly stopped angsting, but I find myself setting up these weird reward systems -- e.g. "Okay, if I make it though another hundred pages of Tolstoy today, I get to watch two more episodes tonight" -- as if to prove to myself that my brain isn't really turning to mush.

The thing about the Identical series is that I'll think, oh, I'll just read the first piece and then I'll stop. But I never do stop. I've promised myself not to read it again until it's finished; we'll see how long that promise lasts.

Ok, for one, your name is totally cool!

Last fall, on a whim, my husband and I both dyed our pubic hair hot pink.

And this, is just fucking great!

I'm friending you, hope that's ok!

[identity profile] slinkling.livejournal.com 2006-05-26 05:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! Always nice to have new friends. A little weird to have them on the basis of dyed pubic hair, but hey, whatever. ;-)

[identity profile] candidlily.livejournal.com 2006-05-26 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
It seems you have a great sense of humor, and that plus being Smallville fan makes you awesome. Especially if you're a Lex fan. :D So I'm friending you! Yay for delurking!

Hee! Thank you. Delurking day rocks. (Excellent icon, by the way.)

I am so glad you delurked and came into fandom:) We have very similuar likes and dislikes, which is neat.

I think I was bored one night and surfed online until I found a story by Lenore

*nods* I was on vacation, hanging out on TWoP one day, and clicked on fan fic recs just because I needed something to occupy my time. 6 months later and that seems to be the only thing that occupies my time!

I am very fascinated that you're a novelist O_O and I hope you write Clex someday!

[identity profile] slinkling.livejournal.com 2006-05-26 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I am so glad you delurked and came into fandom:)

That's such a sweet thing to say -- thank you!

I wonder if all addictions originally stem from boredom?

And I kind of hope that I *don't* write Clex (assuming "Lex on X" doesn't count), but honestly, it'll probably happen. I'll kick and scream while it happens, but it's seeming more and more inevitable. ;-)
