I see that a number of folks on my flist now have Google+ accounts, which means I could probably wrangle myself an invite, but I'm not sure I actually want one, because my primary motivation for getting one was that it wasn't Facebook (I'm sure everyone's already seen
this xkcd comment on it), and I really do feel like Facebook has no commitment to my privacy AT ALL, whereas I trust google a little more. And I like the fact that circles is a built-in feature--you go, social media sites, finally getting to where LJ has been for over a decade. Anyone else sick of the tech articles talking about how revolutionary this is?
But I've recently seen a lot of posts talking about G+ and privacy concerns--how they're deleting accounts where the user name doesn't sound like a real name, how you have to make a public gmail profile, how they want you to use a real picture, how you have to let it connect to your Picasa account, etc. etc. (
here and
here are some discussion of these issues, and there is a lot more at this dreamwidth community
here). So now I'm not sure. I was actually going to try to set up both a fannish and nonfannish g+ account if I ever got invitations, but now I'm wondering if there's a point in trying for a fannish one, and if I even want an account at all. Anyone with or without a G+ account have thoughts on this?
