norwich36: (watching TV)
Well, [livejournal.com profile] thefourthvine posted recs yesterday, and that meant I stayed up until two a.m. reading a really sweet Naruto story, of all things. (Have I seen one minute of the source text? No. She gave enough explanation in the rec to contextualize it, though). It made me very happy between midnight and two a.m., which counts as today, right? Though the sleep deprivation, not so much.

Also, someone brought in pizza around lunchtime, and free pizza is always happy making. (And cushions the stomach against the amount of caffeine I am imbibing to stay awake today).

Recent TV has sometimes been happy-making and sometimes merely puzzling. These are less formal reviews than they are emotional responses:

Note to self: You have only yourself to blame if you battle insomnia with scary TV, and then end up dreaming that Barack Obama's opponent for president is Catherine Weaver. Creepy, creepy, creepy.

I was worried about the fact that I'm working late on Monday nights now and will have to tape both T:SCC and Heroes, but after watching the season premiere of Heroes I'm not sure that's going to be a problem.

Heroes

There are about 6 enormous work projects on my desk that I must complete today, none of which I have any desire to work on, so it seems like time to write a Heroes review. *Headdesk*

Spoilers for 2.2, with several gratuitous references to Highlander and the Addams Family )
norwich36: (Addison skeptical)
Work is seriously kicking my ass these days, to the point that I'm actually feeling oppressed by the advent of the new TV season, because there are a ton of shows I want to watch and no time to watch them. I actually got up at 5 this morning to watch Heroes (after getting home at 11 last night), but that is not going to be possible all the time, so I may be avoiding the f-list periodically due to a fear of spoilers of all the shows I will be taping and watching on the weekends, and also because I just have less time to check it.

Shows I am regularly taping, at least for the time being: Heroes, Reaper, Bionic Woman, Smallville, Supernatural, Gray's Anatomy, Blood Ties, and possibly also that other vampire cop show that's going to be on Fridays. Of these, the only one I'm going to be likely to watch on its actual night is Smallville, and that's mainly so I can more or less keep up with review collection for [livejournal.com profile] eat_crow.

But I will probably be commenting a lot less and posting a lot less, at least for the next few months until things at work settle down.

Meanwhile, a few brief thoughts on Heroes )

Could someone recap the last 2 minutes of the show for me? Apparently my VCR clock is a little fast.

I've been having a few interesting discussions with people in my comments and in other peoples comments about Heroes, and so I'm bringing those together here for my own reference and also to see if anyone has thoughts about them. Also, it's an excuse to use my new Niki icon.

First of all, [livejournal.com profile] random_serious and I were kind of bemused that Clearly Evil Pixie's ( TM [livejournal.com profile] latxcvi) name is actually Eden. Is that an ironic usage? That prompted me to look up the meaning of different characters' names. Here is what I was able to find, though I don't actually speak Japanese, so if anyone can weigh in with corrections that would be great.

Niki: Depending on its derivation, it either means "victory of the people" (if From Nichola--though Nike by itself is just victory) or "true image" (if taken from Veronica).

Mohinder: great Indra (and Indra is the Vedic god of thunder, patron of warriors)

Claire: Clear, bright, famous

Michah: who is like God

Matthew: Gift of God

Nathan: giver (or if it's short for Nathaniel, God has given)

Peter: rock

Bennett: from "Benedict," meaning Blessed

Isaac: he laughs

I couldn't find specific definitions for Hiro (Hiroshi means generous, but I couldn't find Hiro by itself) or Ando (the word means "relief" if the online Japanese to English dictionary I found can be trusted), though of course Hiro must have been deliberately chosen since it sounds like Hero.

I don't know if I draw any conclusions from these names, whether they're deliberate or accidental, intentional or ironic, but it was interesting to look them up.

And behind the cut, unrelated speculation on Niki and her alter-ego that include spoilers for 1x06 (but I'm unspoiled beyond that--please don't spoil me!)

I've been seeing a lot of squeeage about Heroes on my f-list, so I'd like to recommend (for those of you who haven't found it already) [livejournal.com profile] ninth_wonders, the daily newsletter for Heroes. They link to fic, reviews, icons, screencaps, new communities, and all sorts of other useful stuff.

And as long as I'm pimping communities, I just want to remind everyone about [livejournal.com profile] eat_crow, the community for Smallville reviews and meta. We take any kind of reviews--positive, negative, mixed, analytical, stream-of-consciousness, satirical, pure squee, whatever. You can also link to reviews you've posted in your journal there, as long as the entry is not friendslocked and your comments are open to everyone.

If you are on my f-list and have posted a Smallville review that was unlocked and more than a sentence or two long, I have probably linked to it in the master posts for this season:Zod , Sneeze , Wither , and Arrow. Please let me know if you don't want your review linked, and I will remove the link.
