Happy Thanksgiving
Nov. 27th, 2008 07:45 pmTo everybody celebrating, happy thanksgiving!
I had a pretty quiet Thanksgiving. I have two friends whose houses I generally alternate Thanksgivings at, but both were out of town this year, and while I had another invitation, I decided I wasn't feeling social enough to hang out with a bunch of people I don't know for several hours, so I stayed home and cooked experimental vegetarian Thanksgiving dishes instead: Thai Pumpkin curry, Sweet potato and corn soup, and cornmeal crunch. ( recipes behind the cut ) While I wouldn't say the cornmeal crunch was the best thing I'd ever eaten, I'd definitely put it in the top ten best things I've ever eaten. That one is definitely going to become one of my potluck standards.
The funny thing is, I'm more than a thousand miles from my family, and yet I probably talked to them more today than I would have if I was actually physically present. (Four and a half hours on the phone--and my family isn't really given to long conversation in person, especially my brothers). So I didn't feel lonely or anything.
This year, I'm thankful for a lot of things. I'm very thankful that despite the grim economic outlook, I feel hopeful for the future for the first time in a long time, in large measure due to President-elect Barack Obama. (And I really have to stop watching interviews with him and Michelle, because I fear my insane hero-worship will truly enter tinhat territory at some point). I'm also thankful that despite recent setbacks like prop 8, there are still judges who recognize that gay families deserve protection, too . (Warning: that story made me cry). And on a more personal level, I'm thankful for my family, my friends, local fangirls to hang out with and chat about J2 or go see Twilight with (waves at
rsadelle), fandom in general, which always can make me happy when I am sad or enrage me on those rare occasions when I am too calm, and especially all of you lovely folks on my friendslist who brighten my days.
And for everyone who is currently cheerfully full of pie and sentiment, this looks like a very good cause, if you have a spare dollar.
