Yeah, not dead, just working a lot. But I had to take a break to dive into the first of the SPN Bigbang stories. I'm quite sure I won't be reviewing these as regularly as I did last summer, when I was working a lot fewer hours, but I did have some thoughts on the ones posted today. Don't click if you like your recs unmixed with criticism. Read more... )

This has got to be the best AU I've read in Supernatural fandom, at least in terms of worldbuilding: Below Skyscrapers is set in a world where the supernatural is common knowledge, so there exists organizations like the FBSI (Federal Bureau of Supernatural Investigation), and all public buildings are warded against demons (though some are too cheap to maintain the wards). In this world, Dean is an ordinary cop who has to deal with extraordinary events--like demonic ritual murders--and occasionally has angelic consultants to help out.

The story is Dean/Castiel, but even if you don't like the pairing you might give this a try, because of the excellent worldbuilding and plot (and the fact that it isn't really so much a shippy story as a plotty story with relationship trimming).

I've read a lot of really good codas to SPN 5.16 (The Dark Side of the Moon), but only now are we starting to see people take the ramifications of that episode and use it to reinterpret earlier events. So this is not precisely a coda to SPN 5.16--it's more like a prequel that helps make sense of that episode (and the entire season) in a way I really loved: [livejournal.com profile] etrix's Choices, Choices, Choices. A really, really interesting take on why Sam and Dean are so divided this season.

Or a summer's day, if you're in the southern hemisphere. No actual seasonality implied in the recs; I just suck at titling my posts.

Anyway, here are some RPS recs of the CWRPS variety, generally involving the J's in some manner, though also including het, threesomes and foursomes: Read more... )

SPN/Glee crossover (Yes, you read that correctly), in which Sue Sylvester is definitely the best candidate to defeat Lucifer in the apocalypse: You Think This is Hard? Try Being the Michael Sword--that's hard! (Gen). Hilarious.

Thanks very much to [livejournal.com profile] latxcvi, [livejournal.com profile] lonelywalker, [livejournal.com profile] cormallen and [livejournal.com profile] ciaan for even more snowflakes!

This particular rec post is in honor of [livejournal.com profile] slinkling, who is finally current with SPN in real time (yay!) and looking for recs. These are all episode codas for season 5 episodes--the vast majority of them are gen. This has truly been an excellent season for codas; these are just a few of my favorites, organized by episode:

A coda to Free to Be You and Me )
Codas to The End )
Codas to Abandon All Hope )

Ok, wow, I did not realize when I started compiling these that every single damn story was a giant angst-fest, so I must recommend something light and funny so you all aren't burying your heads under your pillows for a week after reading these. So here: LIGHT AND FLUFFY SPN AU FIC of the Dean/Castiel variety:

in the form of romantic comedy )

Some recs

Since the fact that nearly all the shows I watch are on hiatus could potentially mean I don't post again until late January, I thought I might break the silence with a few recs. (Sorry, for those of you who are already subscribed to my delicious account, these are all repeats of recs I have bookmarked there).

Supernatural gen recs )
Supernatural het recs: mostly Becky/Chuck and Sam/Ruby, with one Sam/Jess )

SPN slash, mostly Dean/Castiel, occasionally with a side of Sam/Gabriel )
SPN slash: Sam/Dean )

Okay, that's probably enough for one day!

In other news, thanks to people who have given me advice about word processing programs, but in case you missed the post: I'm looking for advice on wordprocessing programs to use on my shiny new netbook, so if you have any feelings on the merits of Open Office or Google docs or something similar, please let me know .

Some of these are remixes and some of these are the stories the remixes are based on that I hadn't read before. A mixed bag: Harry Potter, Firefly, and SPN: Read more... )

I thought about recommending my favorites over at the [livejournal.com profile] spnkink_meme, but decided that was a little personal. Returning to that meme every few hours simply reminds me of that truism, my kinks are hot, other people's kinks are hilarious and/or squicky. Though sometimes the squicky ones produce the best fic; I don't really understand how that works. And speaking of which, everyone's seen the Lucifer/Sarah Palin one , though, right?

I will link to one that got posted outside the meme, though: [livejournal.com profile] pandarus's amazingly hot and hilarious Jared/Jensen crossdressing Regency Romance is definitely worth reading.

And in no way am I linking to the meme in the hopes that people not already writing over there will go and fill a whole bunch of anonymous prompts I might have left. I would never be that blatantly self-serving.

So, in addition to today being the opening of Half-Blood Prince and the season premiere of Leverage (both of which I very much enjoyed--more on that in a later post), I've been looking forward to this day for weeks because it was the posting date for [livejournal.com profile] hansbekhart's Victor Henriksen epic, The Passenger. Technically this story is Dean/Victor, but the focus of the story isn't on the romance. In this story, Victor survives Lilith's tortures and is thrown into the world of hunting, in the middle of events he doesn't understand with only Dean to guide him.

I love this story to pieces. Not only does it create a terrific backstory for Henriksen (who's always been one of my favorite SPN minor characters), but it also goes AU after the events of Jus in Bello, leading to a very different series of events with respect to Dean's deal that I found very satisfying.

I don't even think this is a bigbang story, but it is epic in both scope and length: [livejournal.com profile] leonidaslion's The Light of Munin. (Sam/Dean) This author is known for dark themes, and they are here aplenty--graphic torture, noncon, more graphic torture, character death (not Sam or Dean), and more noncon and graphic torture. If you can stand to read that, though, this is an amazing story set in a post-apocalyptic landscape, where Sam and Dean graphically experience the consequences of unleashing hell on earth. The worldbuilding in this is incredible; it's set thousands of years after Lucifer's rise, and the world has been completely transformed. There are basically no humans left alive, and the world is ruled by demons and toxic monsters. There is a whole separate demonic language and everything (complete with glossary).

And when fate finally has Sam and Dean stumble across each other again, they don't remember their pasts and they can't even communicate. Even without the memory of each other, they are ineluctably drawn together, but it is a real question as to whether they will simply end up destroying each other, or if any kind of happiness is possible now.

but I bet all you spn_j2_bigbang readers will love me for it. I got tired of not knowing what particular stories were going to be posted when, since the master posting schedule on the comm doesn't give summaries, and the summaries don't seem to be arranged in any logical order (ie by date or alphabetical) other than the breakdown into gen SPN, slash SPN, and RPS. SO, I thought, I'll just make my own list of the authors by date and cut-and-paste the summaries. Easy peasy!

Ugh. Four hours later, I am wondering why I thought this was a brilliant idea, but it's done. It's a huge file (46 pages in word) so I posted it over on Dreamwidth here. I didn't proofread anything--literally I just cut-and-pasted the author summaries by date--but since it's all one file it's searchable, so if you absolutely need to know when the next Dean/Castiel story is going to be posted (July 2) or when the fantabulous-sounding Jedi AU is coming (June 17) or whether there are going to be any stories featuring the wonderful Victor Henrickson (yes! One June 26, one July 13 and one July 15, though everybody is still spelling his name differently), or what, exactly, the brilliant lazy_daze is writing about this year (a J2 Wimbledon AU), you can easily find it.

Doing this also made me realize (a) what a disappointing amount of het there is this year (dammit! I wanted more Sam/Ruby) and (b) there is an absolutely ridiculous number of J2 AUs to look forward to.

So I take it whoever did the bigbang scheduling decided Friday was for angst? And since that was the theme, I decided to add another non-bigbang story that fit the theme to this rec set as well. Read more... )
